The custodial murder of George Floyd on the 25th of May 2020, sparked global protests against police brutality while also amplifying the momentum of the Black Lives Matter movement.

However, in India, when several Bollywood celebrities like Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Tiger Shroff, Disha Patani and Kareena Kapoor Khan jumped on the ‘justice for George Floyd’ bandwagon, they were promptly called out for their hypocrisy as these actresses are known to have endorsed skin-lightening products in the past. These beauty products have only helped catalyse the country’s obsession with fair skin.

It is a known fact that one of the most popular cosmetic products to have come out of India is called ‘Fair & Lovely’. This was first introduced in the market in 1975, and since then this cream has managed to cross an INR 2,000 – crore sales milestone despite receiving heavy backlash for promoting colourist and equating fair skin with beauty and success.

Apart from being endorsed by celebrities like Yami Gautam, the product has also received ‘glowing’ reviews from a multitude of Youtubers and Tiktokers.

However, one YouTube creator in particular had no time for this product’s nonsense and the unrealistic beauty standards. That was, Anncy Twinke, a Dubai – based YouTuber who posts entertaining videos related to beauty and lifestyle.

Approximately a year ago, Anncy posted a video titled “how to look fAiR & LoVelY in 3 DAYS |Product Review”. The video wasn’t as famous that time as it is now, due to the hypocrisy of the Bollywood actors. In this video, Anncy roasts the fairness cream in a way we’ve never seen before.

She starts off by giving the viewers an overview of the product like all other review videos on YouTube. But, this wasn’t just another review video on YouTube, this was way better. Things took an interesting further in the video.

She also peppers her ‘review’ with strong statements such as “This packaging says it’s ‘Fair & Lovely’, sadly I am not fair, so that means I’m not lovely”. “So I am really trying to be this white…Paper White”.

She continues by saying “Now I am going to remove my makeup off and I am going to show you guys how I use this”. And just when you think to yourself: “Oh, so now she actually plans to apply this thing all over her face”, something amazingly magical happens. She tosses the product into the trash can, exactly where it belongs. And that’s about it! That’s the entire video.
