A team of researchers from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Bhopal claimed to have sequenced the genome of the turmeric plant for the first time in the world.

The results of the study have recently been published in a research journal related to the prestigious Nature Group – Communications Biology. According to the team, with increasing interest in herbal medicine around the world, researchers are focusing on herbaceous regions, such as their genetic background.

So far, only a few well-assembled herbal genomes have been studied. Vineet K Sharma, Associate Professor, Department of Biological Sciences, IISER Bhopal, said that we have sequenced the genome of turmeric for the first time in the world. More than 3,000 studies focused on turmeric have been published, but the genome sequence was discovered only after our team’s study.
