How old were you when you got to know that the emoticons we use on a daily basis have a day all to themselves? I’m not going to lie, I learned this yesterday and I was speechless and happy and surprised too at the same time.

Ever since we were introduced to social media sites and applications, we have been extremely familiar with emojis. Those cute, tiny faces that help us express our emotions virtually.

We all can agree that life without emojis would be boring. Like you send a heart to someone when you like them, you send them a sad emoji when you’re upset, you send them a laughing emoji when you’re laughing at a joke they cracked.

Truly, emojis are a savior and so the 17th of July is celebrated as World Emoji Day, for the past six years. Yes, you read that right. We have been celebrating World Emoji day since the year 2014.

Did you know where these emojis originated from?
I’ll tell you, so the very first emoji was created in the year 1999 by Shigetaka Kurita, an engineer who worked at a Japanese mobile operator, NTT Docomo. So the first time when he distributed the first 175 pixel emojis In Yahoo Messenger, the oldest ‘mainstream’ emoji was used. In 2010, emoji made it to the mobile operating system and from there it became widely available.

What happens on this day? Soon this year, we’ll be having a set of new emojis! Are you excited?? I sure am. The new emojis will be gender-neutral, a bubble tea emoji, the transgender flag, and a lot more. Just like us, emojis too have come a long way 
