A 6.8 magnitude earthquake, according to the US Geological Survey, struck close to the Pacific Coast, around 50 miles (80 kilometres) south of Guayaquil, the second-largest city in Ecuador. One person perished in Peru and 14 others perished in Ecuador as a result of the earthquake, while at least 126 people were injured, according to local officials.
