The planet has been discovered by a researchers team led by students and the University of Hawaii faculty at Manoa. This research has been accepted for publication in the Monthly Notes of the Royal Astronomical Society. Eric Guidos, the lead author of this study and Professor in the Department of Earth Science at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, says that this spectacular discovery has joined the list of planets that can be directly observed from Earth with a telescope.
Astronomers say that this planet is so young that it is still scorching due to the energy of its formation. Its temperature is similar to that of the lava emanating from Earth’s Kilowaya volcano. Guidos said that by analyzing the light coming from this planet, its composition and formation can be found about how it formed in the long disappeared gas and dust disk around the star.
First seen three years ago
Scientists have named this planet 2M0437b; it was first seen in 1918 with the Subaru Telescope on Mauna Kea, after which scientists are constantly monitoring it. In this study, the astronomers used the Keck 2 telescope’s adaptive optics system with the Keck Observatory’s Near Infrared Camera.
Confirmed to be a planet
Through these instruments, astronomers confirmed that planet 2M0437b that this body is a star’s companion and not distant. Dr Adam Kraus, a co-author of this study and a professor in the Department of Astronomy at the University of Texas at Austin, said: “Special data from the Keck Observatory helped to confirm that this haze is moving with its star in neighbouring space. Now we will also be able to measure the activity of this planet’s orbit.
How far is this planet from its star
Scientists said in their statement that this planet and its star are located in a nursery of stars called Taurus Cloud. This planet is in a much wider orbit than the orbit of the planets of our solar system. At present, it is more than a hundred times the distance of our Earth-Sun from its star. This is the reason why it becomes easy to observe.
Another co-author of this study, Michael Liu, explains that the world’s two largest telescopes, the Adaptive Optics technology and the clear cloudy sky of Maunakea, came in handy for this discovery. 2M0437b The planet’s orbit is very blurry, so it is not visible to the naked eye.
