Shreyas Iyer has been named Kolkata Knight Riders’ captain for the 2022 IPL season, according to the franchise’s Twitter account. The India batsman was bought for $12.25 crore by the two-time winners during the IPL 2022 auction, making him the third most expensive acquisition after Ishan Kishan and Deepak Chahar. He becomes the franchise’s sixth captain ever.
Shreyas Iyer had to relinquish Delhi Capital’s leadership post after missing the first half of the IPL 2021 in India due to a shoulder injury, and the team’s captaincy was given over to Rishabh Pant, who commanded the side for the whole season, even when Iyer returned.
In the 2020 season of the IPL, Iyer guided the Delhi Capitals to the final, however, the team was defeated by the Mumbai Indians in the final. Iyer had scored 519 runs in 17 matches that year, with an average of 34.60 and a high of 88 not out against KKR. Unfortunately, Iyer’s participation was restricted the next year due to a shoulder injury, and DC chose Rishabh Pant as their captain.
Iyer became the youngest captain in the IPL after taking up the captaincy midway through the 2018 season. Iyer struck an undefeated 93 off 40 balls in his debut match as captain, also against KKR, and set a few records. He was the first skipper to hit ten sixes in an IPL inning, and he also scored the most runs on his IPL leadership debut, eclipsing Aaron Finch’s 64 against the Punjab Kings in 2013.
In less than a year, Iyer has become KKR’s third captain. The franchise replaced Dinesh Karthik with Eoin Morgan as captain in 2021, however with both former cricketers no longer with the Knight Riders, Iyer has been named the team’s new captain. After Sourav Ganguly, McCullum, Gautam Gambhir, Karthik, and Morgan, he becomes the franchise’s sixth overall captain, and he will try to cement his legacy by leading KKR to their third IPL title.
