Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has targeted BCCI President Sourav Ganguly. Manjrekar clearly said that there was no need for Ganguly to make controversial remarks on the issue of Virat Kohli’s removal from the captaincy. This is the job of the head of the selection committee. Before the tour of South Africa, the BCCI suddenly snatched the captaincy of the ODI team from Virat Kohli. After this, there has been an earthquake in Indian cricket. It appeared that the relationship between Kohli and BCCI (Virat vs. BCCI) is not cordial.

In an interview, Sanjay Manjrekar said, “I don’t know why there should be a public conversation, or any statement should have been made by the BCCI President when in reality it is the job of the chairman of the selection committee. The selection committee chairman is critical in the Indian cricket administration, but he does not get the importance given. Giving the example of Ricky Ponting, Manjrekar said that when he was removed from the captaincy, the selectors had clarified everything.

Before Manjrekar, former Indian captain Dilip Vengsarkar had also said that Ganguly should not have spoken on the issue of captaincy on behalf of the national selectors. Chetan Sharma, the selection committee head, should have said on selection or captaincy. The selection committee decides to choose or remove the captain. It does not come under Ganguly’s purview.

Even before the start of the T20 World Cup 2021, Virat Kohli announced leaving the captaincy of the T20 team. However, he wanted to remain the captain of the ODI and Test teams. But after India’s disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup, Kohli was suddenly removed from the captaincy of the ODI team, and Rohit Sharma was given the captaincy. Sourav Ganguly later revealed that he had requested Kohli not to step down from the T20 captaincy.

However, Virat Kohli refuted Ganguly’s claim, saying that he did not have to leave the captaincy. One and a half hours before selecting the Test team for the South Africa tour, he got information about his removal from the captaincy. On the separate claims of Kohli-Ganguly, Manjrekar said, “This match should have been Kohli vs. Chetan Sharma (chief selector) instead of Sourav Ganguly vs. Virat Kohli.”
