At a lavish premiere ceremony on Sunday night, the lead single from Mani Ratnam’s monumental work Ponniyin Selvan I — Kaveri Se Milne — was unveiled. The accompanying lyrical video provided snippets of both the broad scope and specific situations from the movie. However, the song’s composition and the fact that Mani and composer AR Rahman were reunited caught the attention of the audience more than anything else.

AR Rahman wrote the song, which is a homage to the Kaveri river, and he, Swagat Rathod, and Pooja Tiwari provided the vocals. Mehboob is the author of the Hindi lyrics. Ponni Nadhi is the name of the song in Tamil. Ilango Krishnan wrote the lyrics, while Rahman, AR Raihanah, and Bamba Bakya sang it.

The film’s setting, the former Chola Empire, may be seen in the video in passing. Additionally, some stills and sequences depict Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan, played by Karthi, travelling across the Chola countryside. “When I heard this song for the very first time, I felt as if I was riding into the Chola Kingdom! Pure magic! Join me in this journey”, the actor remarked on Twitter after posting the Tamil version of the song.

Produced by Mani Ratnam’s Madras Talkies, Ponniyin Selvan is a film based on the epic novel of the same name by Kalki. The movie will be released by Lyca Productions. On September 30, the first chapter will be shown in theatres all around the world. Along with Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai, and Trisha, Karthi also appears in the film. A historical epic set in the Middle Ages, the movie centres on Raja Raja Cholan, also known as Ponniyin Selvan.
