Mauni Amavasya fast story
According to a popular legend, a Brahmin lived in Kanchipuri with his wife Dhanvati and seven sons-a daughter. The daughter’s name was Gunwati. The Brahmin wanted to find his daughter’s groom after the marriage of all his sons. The Brahmin showed the daughter’s horoscope to Pandit. Seeing the horoscope, the Pandit said that there is defect in life of the daughter. That means she will be widowed. Pandit suggested a solution to remedy this defect.
He told that if the girl worships a separate Soma (Dhobin), then this defect will be removed. The quality will make Soma happy with her service. These measures were sent by Brahmin to take his younger son and daughter to Soma. Soma lived on the Sinhala island across the ocean. The younger son sat under the shade of a tree worrying about crossing the ocean. The vulture’s family lived on that tree. In the evening, when the mother of the vulture’s children came back to her nest, she came to know that her vulture children did not take food.
Kindness of the Vulture
The vulture’s children said to their mother that two creatures are sitting hungry and thirsty under the tree since morning. Till they do not eat anything, we will not eat anything. Hearing this, the mother of vultures went to them and said – I have come to know your wish. I will make you cross the ocean in the morning. But before that, eat something, I bring you food.
The next day the vulture got both brothers and sisters across the ocean. Both reached Soma’s house and started serving her without telling anything. Her house began to daub. Soma one day asked his daughters-in-law, who daubs our house every morning? Everyone said that no one, we are the one who leaves the house. But Soma could not believe the words of her family.
One night she woke up till the morning to find out this secret and she found out that these brothers and sisters daubs her home. Soma talked to both of them and both told Soma about the sister’s fault and redressal. Then Soma promised to prevent Gunvati from that defect. But Gunvati’s brother urged her to come home. Soma did not deny, she reached the Brahmin’s house with both.
Fruit of virtues
Soma told her daughters-in-law that if someone dies in her absence, do not destroy the body, wait for me. Saying this, she went to the house with Gunvati. The program of the marriage of Gunvati decided. But her husband died as soon as Saptapadi. Soma immediately gave the fruits of her virtues to Gunvati. Her husband immediately became alive. Soma left both of them with gratitude. Soma’s son, Jamata and husband died by giving virtue to virtue.
Soma worshipped Vishnu in the shadow of Peepal on the way to accumulate the virtuous fruit and performed 108 parikramas and kept a fast. The death of his family became alive as soon as the parikrama was completed. She got the fruit of the service with an impeccable spirit
