Lata Mangeshkar, India’s nightingale, dies at 92

Lata Mangeshkar, the enormous vocalist who dominated Bollywood playback singing for nearly three-quarters of a century, died on February 6 in Mumbai. She was 92 years old at the time.

Mangeshkar died at 8.12 a.m., according to the medical director of Breach Candy Hospital. “She was a Covid patient who was getting on in years. We did everything we could to save the legend. “However, she experienced issues,” he explained. Mangeshkar had already been diagnosed with Covid-19 as well as pneumonia.

MNS President Raj Thackeray, NCP MP Supriya Sule, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s wife Rashmi, and Lata Mangeshkar’s sister Asha Bhosle well as her brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar, visited the hospital on Saturday to inquire about her condition.

A state funeral will be held for Lata Mangeshkar. The public darshan will be held in Mumbai’s Shivaji Park, and the BMC has been instructed to make preparations.

Lata Mangeshkar was born in Madhya Pradesh on September 28, 1929, with music in her blood. Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, her father, was a musician and theatre actor. Mangeshkar collaborated with music legends of all generations throughout her career, delivering memorable songs that are still relevant today. Mangeshkar, who was known for her versatility, worked in various cinema genres.

Lata Mangeshkar was mentored by Master Vinayak, a 1930s director, and Ghulam Haider after going to Mumbai. She then had a particular bond with composer Madan Mohan, with whom she wrote some of her most memorable songs.

Lata Mangeshkar, who won the Dadasaheb Phalke award in 1989, sang in over a thousand Hindi films and sang in over 36 languages, though mostly in Hindi and Marathi.

She was granted the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, in 2001 in recognition of her achievements to the country. She is only the second vocalist to get this honor, following M S Subbulakshmi. In 2007, France bestowed the highest civilian honor, the Officer of the Legion of Honour.
