What is Lactose Intolerance?

The problem of lactose intolerance is also actually linked to sugar. Lactose simply means the sugar present in dairy products or milk etc. A person suffering from lactose intolerance cannot fully digest the sugars present in these substances, resulting in symptoms such as diarrhoea, gas and bloating begin to emerge.

An enzyme (lactase) produced in the small intestine is responsible for this condition. If this enzyme is produced in minimal amounts, there is a problem with lactose intolerance. In some cases, it also happens that if the amount of enzyme is small, then a person saves milk or milk products, but if the enzyme is significantly less, then digestion becomes difficult.

Symptoms usually appear after half an hour to 2 hours of milk or milk products consumption. These include vomiting or nausea, abdominal pain or cramps, nervousness, or gas, in addition to diarrhoea. Since milk or dairy products are also necessary for physical development and provide nutrition from them, their consumption is also essential. It becomes necessary for the lactose-intolerant person to find alternatives in such a situation. Especially in the case of children, because if they do not get proper nutrition since childhood, there can be future problems.

Several variations of the problem:

There are two types of lactose intolerance. The first is primary lactose intolerance, in which the enzyme production gradually decreases from childhood to adulthood. The second is secondary lactose intolerance, in which this problem arises due to some disease, injury or surgery related to the intestine. These diseases include intestinal infection, celiac disease, bacterial issues, Crohn’s disease, etc. In rare cases, sometimes, this problem can also be congenital.

Follow the proper diet after the test:

After some simple tests and physical examination, your doctor can clarify that you are suffering from lactose intolerance. The doctor can tell you about the precautions related to diet. Usually, stopping the consumption of milk or milk products gives relief. However, in some cases, it also happens that even the consumption of the said substance in a small amount does not cause problems. But if the problem is more, it is better to keep their distance. Nowadays, lactose-free products are also readily available in the market which can be used.

Your doctor may also give you some common medicines to help control your symptoms. But the most important thing is that you plan your diet so that you can get all the nutrients from it. Because you cannot eat milk or milk products, you may be deficient in substances like calcium, vitamin D, riboflavin and protein. That is why you must include those things in the diet that can fulfil these nutrients.

Consume these things:

Having lactose intolerance doesn’t mean you can’t get the nutrient. Apart from dairy products, you can also supply nutrients for yourself by other means. Do include curd in your diet. Yoghurt is beneficial for gut health and suitable for lactose intolerance people. Apart from this, green leafy vegetables like spinach, fenugreek and broccoli, fresh fruits like oranges, soy milk, almonds, tofu and non-vegetarians can use particular types of fish etc. These will provide you with plenty of calcium and vitamins, and minerals. The best source for vitamin D is sunlight; consume plenty of it too.

Don’t eat this:

People with lactose intolerance do not suffer only from milk and dairy products. Many packaged foods may contain dairy protein or lactose. So if you use any packaged material such as coffee powder, pancake, biscuit or cake mix, baked food, bread, processed cereal, soup or creamy sauce etc., check the ingredients before buying.

If you cannot meet all the nutrients from your diet, then consult a doctor and take supplements. Remember that the supplement is to be taken in the same quantity and for the same number of days as prescribed by the doctor. Do not take any medicine or accessory on your own mind. Also, remember that only milk or milk products cannot harm you. Sometimes, certain birth control pills or vitamin pills can also cause lactose intolerance. Therefore, take the advice of a doctor about any medicines you are taking.
