NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope will be launched into space on the 22nd of this month. Scientists have high hopes for this telescope. At present, NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope is considered the most powerful telescope among the telescopes installed in space. Nevertheless, the James Webb Telescope is also considered a powerful telescope. It is not surprising that James Webb is being compared to Hubble in such a situation. Regarding this comparison, NASA says that it is the successor of Hubble to James Webb.
Substitute or successor
Many scientists also say that the James Webb Telescope is an alternative to the Hubbus Space Telescope. Still, if both telescopes are looked at carefully, they cannot be seen separately so easily. The reason for this is that both have different capabilities. This is why such a debate is being seen on the comparison of both.
If we talk about the Hubble Space Telescope, it was installed in the low Earth orbit in 1990. In the past 31 years, Hubble has made 1.4 million observations, including observations of interstellar objects, capturing comets colliding with Jupiter, and discovering the moons of Pluto.
The Hubble Telescope is an optical telescope. It can capture the rays of light coming from distant space. Its five main instruments can detect ultraviolet light, visible light, and near-infrared waves in the electromagnetic spectrum. It has also proved helpful in capturing galaxy mergers, investigating supermassive black holes, and understanding the history of our universe.
James’s Four Instruments
The James Webb Space Telescope consists of four scientific instruments. It will mainly observe infrared waves, in which it will be able to catch waves of 0.6 to 28 microns. At the same time, Hubble’s instruments can catch waves of 0.8 to 2.5 microns. The wavelength of electromagnetic spectrum infrared waves ranges from 0.7 to 100 microns.
Mirrors of both telescopes
There is also a difference between the original mirror of Hubble and the Web. Where the actual mirror of the Web is 6.5 meters in diameter. The diameter of Hubble is 2.4 meters. That’s why Web’s camera can see a much larger area than Hubble’s camera. Webb’s sun shield is also significant, about 22 meters long and 12 meters wide.
Hubble is orbiting the Earth at an altitude of 570 kilometres. At the same time, the Web will not revolve around the Earth. It will revolve around the Sun by staying 1.5 million kilometres away from the Earth. It will revolve around the Sun along with the Earth. This way, it will remain stable in the same place compared to the Earth and the Sun.
Of course, the James Webb will prove to be a telescope quite different from Hubble and, in many ways, better capabilities. While Hubble can see several infant galaxies, Webb will see newborn galaxies. He can also see the early forms of the Galaxy, the origin of extraterrestrials and stars. Scientists say that to a large extent, James Webb will fulfill many of Hubble’s shortcomings and be able to go beyond them.
