Iron Man, played by Robert Downey Jr., made the ultimate sacrifice to rescue the universe as Avengers: Endgame came to a finale, leaving fans of Tony Stark feeling more bitter than sweet. Although Endgame was supposed to be Downey Jr.’s final appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans are holding out hope that the character would do a miracle turn around and make a comeback.
Jon Favreau, who directed Iron Man and played Happy Hogan in the movies, was recently revealed to have pleaded with Endgame filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo to keep the character. Anthony said, “Part of the pressure came from Jon Favreau, who called us up after he read the script… and said to us, ‘Are you really going to kill Iron Man?”
Joe said, “I remember pacing on the corner of a stage on the phone with Favreau trying to talk him off a ledge. Because he’s like, ‘You can’t do this. It’s gonna devastate people, and you don’t want them, you know, walking out of the theatre and into traffic.’ We did it anyway.”
In the movie, Tony Stark passes away after giving his life to save Thanos from destroying the universe. One of the highest-grossing films, Avengers Endgame was a smashing triumph. Several additional Marvel projects were also revealed during the San Diego Comic-Con, including two new Avengers movies.
