On October 11, the world celebrates International Day of the Girl Child to bring attention to the value and promise that girls hold for our society’s future. The 10th anniversary of the International Day of the Girl will be observed in 2022. The need to address the issues girls confront, support girls’ empowerment, and ensure that their human rights are upheld are all highlighted by the International Day of the Girl Child.
Theme
The International Day of the Girl Child’s theme for this year is “Our time is now—our rights, our future.” The numerous obstacles that girls must overcome in order to fulfil their potential are highlighted. The ongoing issues of COVID-19, climate change, and humanitarian war all around the world have made this worse. Girls have challenges in the areas of education, physical and mental health, and living a life free from violence.

History
The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the most forward-thinking plan ever for advancing not only women’s rights but also the rights of girls, was overwhelmingly ratified by all nations during the 1995 World Conference on Women in Beijing. The Beijing Declaration is the first to include girls’ rights in particular.
The International Day of the Girl Child was established on October 11 by Resolution 66/170 of the United Nations General Assembly, which also recognised the rights of girls and the particular difficulties they face globally.
