Although three-fourths of the Earth’s surface is surrounded by water, only one percent of the world’s water is drinkable for humans. Even today, providing potable water is a massive challenge in many parts of the world. At the same time, clean water is also not available in many places. A lot of work is also being done on the techniques of cleaning water. Now Indian scientists have discovered such a new bacteria that can remove harmful toxins from water and make it drinkable.
This bacterium was discovered by researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology at Banaras Hindu University. This study demonstrates how a bacterial strainer removes toxic hexavalent chromium from water at infectious sites. Hexavalent chromium is a heavy metal ion that can cause several health complications in humans, including several types of cancer and kidney and liver disorders.
Where did the bacteria come from?
Indian scientists took contaminated water from Bala Nala in Singrauli in Madhya Pradesh and isolated the bacteria from it. In this drain, the water from the coal mine is released after treatment. The bacteria discovered in this study have been named Mycobacterium para oxidants strain (VSVM IIT (BHU)).
More effective than traditional methods
Dr Vishal Mishra, who led the study, and his PhD student Vir Singh, said that the new bacterial strain can absorb large amounts of hexavalent chromium. This bacteria is more effective than conventional methods for removing hexavalent chromium from contaminated water.
Passed the tests
Indian scientists also found that the bacterial strain showed a sharp increase in Chromianum VI of the watery medium. And after the treatment process, it is easily separated through that water. Following the discovery of this bacterium, the researchers tested the removal of hexavalent chromium from industrial and artificially contaminated water and found satisfactory results.
Helpful in the water purification process
The researchers claim that they have also tested a mechanism to remove hexavalent chromium in bacterial cells. If a strain of bacteria is trapped in the water treatment process, then this other metal removal process can be removed. Mishra explained how heavy metal systems are activated in bacterial cells when grown in a hexavalent chromium growth medium.
With this discovery, hexavalent chromium removal may be incorporated into low-cost, effective water purification methods. Since the bacteria are easy to grow and serve water purification, they can be used in everyday water treatment plants.
