Assamese litterateur and journalist Homen Borgohain died on Wednesday in a hospital in Guwahati due to complications following the Covid-19 infection. Borgohain was 89 years old and has two sons. He split from his wife and noted litterateur and journalist Nirupama Borgohain a few years ago. Homen Borghohan was confirmed to have been contracted on April 24. He was admitted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital where he was discharged on 7 May after recovering from infection.
He was admitted to a local hospital in the night where he breathed his last at 58 minutes on Wednesday. Noted author and columnist Hommen Borgohain received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1978 for his book Father-Son. He started his career as an Assam Civil Service officer. He later ventured into journalism and worked in popular newspapers and magazines like ‘Amar Assam’, ‘Assam Bani’, ‘Neelachal’, ‘Sutradhar’, ‘Citizen’, ‘Satsori’.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed condolences on the death of Homen Borgohain. Modi tweeted, “Homen Borgohain will be remembered for his valuable contribution to Assamese literature and journalism”. His works reflect various aspects of Assamese life and culture. I am saddened by his demise. My condolences to his family and fans. ” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the people of the state lost their guardians after the death of Homen. Sarma said, “We are all saddened by the passing away of a sparkling star enriching Assamese literature”. His demise has created a void among us “.
The state government decided to conduct the funeral of Homen with full state honours and Education Minister Ranoj Pegu was asked to make necessary arrangements for this. Paresh Barua, the self-styled commander-in-chief of the militant group ULFA (I), also mourned Hommen’s death. Congress state president Ripun Bora also expressed condolences on the demise of Homen Borgohain, saying that he was an out-of-the-box litterateur who contributed to a vital role in society.
