New controversies are coming to the fore in the ongoing Dhaka Premier League (DPL 2021) in Bangladesh. After Shakib Al Hasan got angry at the umpire and threw the stumps and the officials associated with the tournament got caught in stone-pelting, a new ruckus has now arisen. League team Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club has accused Legends of Rupganj player Sabbir Rahman of racially abusing his player Elias Sunny and throwing stones.
The incident took place on June 16 between Dhanmondi and Old DOHS Sports Club. Rahman had come to the ground for his team to play a match against Partex Sporting Club. It is alleged that he abused Sunny who was fielding in the field and threw stones at him. After this, the match was stopped for some time.
Ilyas Sunny informed the on-field umpires Habibur Rahman and Mojahiduzzaman about this. After this match, the Dhanmondi team wrote a letter to the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis to take action. It said, Sabir Rahman, abused Sunny and used racially discriminatory language. As a professional cricketer, this kind of behaviour is not only wrong but also deserves punishment. In this matter, you are specifically requested to take disciplinary action against Sabir Rahman. Sunny said that this type of behaviour of Rahman is not the first time. He said that it all started with the match between Dhanmondi and Roopganj last week.
DPL 2021: Sunny narrated the whole incident
Sunny told ESPNcricinfo, ‘On June 13, when I was batting against Roopganj, Sabir started abusing me. I asked him thrice whether he knew the meaning of what he was saying. But he kept abusing again and again. I got angry after that the umpires separated us. But he kept calling me Kalu again and again.
We won that match so I didn’t pay much attention. But in today’s match, when we were fielding, as soon as the bus from Roopganj came, he started teasing it by saying Kalu, Kalu. I haven’t reached before. But after some time he threw stones at me. I maintained the protocol by telling the umpires. The match stopped for some time. I also spoke to the match referee.
While talking to The Daily Star, Sabir Rahman refused to make racial remarks. He said that the question of throwing stones does not arise. Throwing stones is not easy. Why would he do this? He is a senior player. Now, this matter will be investigated. By the way, Sabir Rahman has been in controversies before. In 2018, he was banned for six months for abusing a fan on social media, which was later reduced to one month. At the same time, in 2017, he had beaten a fan during the match.
