Dhanteras is one of the auspicious days for Hindus. The festive season starts with this day. From this day only, the Diwali celebrations start all over India. Hindus celebrates this day by worshipping certain gods. These gods are Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Dhanvantari, Lord Kubera (God of wealth), and Yamraj (God of Death). This auspicious day falls on Trayodashi Tithi (Thirteenth) of the Krishna Paksha of the Hindu lunar month of Kartik.
Also, on the day of Dhanteras, one more day is there. This day is ‘National Ayurveda Day’. On this day, along with the above gods, people also worship Dhanvantari. Dhanvantari is the God of Ayurveda. And he is the one due to whom people today have the knowledge of Ayurveda. On October 28, 2016, it was celebrated for the first time. And this year it is on November 13, the same date as Dhanteras.
Ways People Celebrate Dhanteras
On this day, people buy gold and silver. The reasons behind this are, that according to Hindu mythology, these metals protect people from bad things. This can be anything negative. And people that’s why consider this purchase of gold and silver as very auspicious. Also, the word Dhanteras comprises two words Dhan and Teras. Dhan means wealth and Teras means thirteenth.
People also light diyas in their homes. And keep them burning all night. This they do to please Goddess Lakshmi and God Dhanvantari. And it is believed that Goddess Lakshmi visits the home of devotees and blesses them. And also fulfill their wishes.
Since this day is considered incredibly propitious, Hindus make new buys, particularly of gold or silver articles, and new utensils as they accept that new abundance or something made of valuable metal would procure them best of luck. The regular conviction is that purchasing gold and silver on Dhanteras brings more riches and flourishing.
Lakshmi Puja on Dhanteras ought to be performed during Pradosh Kaal. This year the Pradosh Kaal on Dhanteras (November 13) begins after dusk and it goes on for around 2 hours and 24 minutes.
