Culture Featured Tops

Built-in the 8th century, the historical Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple holds a number of secrets in their vaults. Along with all the glitters and treasures lies a mystery no one knows about.

The richest temple in the world finds its first mention in ancient Tamil literature. The Thiruvananthapuram located Padmanabha Swamy Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. As per the verdict passed on the 13th of July 2020, the Vishnu temple now belongs to the Royal family of Travancore. The historical temple is run by a trust spearheaded by the royal family.

So you give you a deeper insight into the temple, the main deity of the temple, Padmanabhaswamy is enshrined in the ‘Anantha-sayanam’ position, that is the eternal sleeping position of Yoga Nidra on the serpent Anantha. The Padmanabhaswamy temple is termed as one of the 108 Divya Desams – Holy Abodes of Lord Vishnu and draws scores of crowds in the form of ardent Hindu devotees each year. Many people visit this temple. Not only the citizens of India but people from all over the world visit this temple.

The temple is renowned globally not only because of its worth, and it is the richest temple but also because of the mysteries. So, the temple has six vaults in its basement. From these, five of the vaults have been opened, but there is this one secret vault that still remains unopened to date. It is believed that the opening of this vault could make the Lord extremely angry and annoyed and would bring misfortune to the entire state.

The sixth hidden vault of this temple is believed to store many hidden treasures. Many people tried to know the secrets of the vaults. People tried to open this vault twice in the year 1990 and five times in the year 2002.

The number of myths and tales that surround this temple are numerous. According to the masses, this will lead to the unleashing of a curse upon the entire state. History shows many tales and sagas to vouch for this ideology.

A few years ago when the temple was under the government of Kerala, the Supreme Court ruled out one of its first petition to assess the wealth of the temple under the leadership of advocate TP Sunder Rajan, who had filed a written petition in a Kerala court.

After this, advocate Sunder Rajan passed away mysteriously. His untimely demise was viewed by many as the wrath of God. Many seniors and older devotees of the area also believe that opening of the secret vault of the Padmanabhaswamy temple will invoke massive floods in the area. This ideology is based upon the Ocean theory.

Let me tell you what the ocean theory basically is. So apparently, a century ago, when this same region was encountering a dreaded famine, the officials of the Padmanabhaswamy temple had tried to break open the vault. But they immediately stopped when they heard something that sounded like rushing water. The story went on to suggest that the last vault was connected to the great Arabian Sea and thus opening up the chamber would cause the entire region to get flooded.

It is also believed that the door of this chamber is protected by the Snake-God and thus can be opened only by sadhus who can chant the ‘Garuda Mantra’. But apparently there is not a single sadhu in India who can chant this mantra. Many officials of the Padmanabhaswamy temple also believe that this hidden chamber should never be opened using man-made techniques as it could lead to major catastrophes. Many Hindu mythological experts have also validated this ideology. In conclusion, what is in the vault is still a mystery and will continue to be one.
