Kathmandu: Another issue of China’s growing influence on Nepal today China has started providing internet facility through optical fiber link to Nepal. With this, the reliance on India for Nepal’s Internet has ceased and China has abolished India’s monopoly in this area.

People of Nepal started using internet via China’s optical fiber link on the Himalaya Mountains. To relate to the cyber world, their reliance on India has ended. According to the officials, the initial speed of the Internet received by Chinese fiber link through the Rasuvadari border will be 1.5 gigabyte per second (GBPS), which is less than the speed from India. India was providing speed of 34 Gbps through Biratnagar, Bhairahwa and Birganj. He said that the commercial operation of China’s optical fiber link has started in Himalaya Mountains.

Nepal’s Information and Communications Minister Mohan Bahadur Basnet inaugurated the Nepal-China border cross-border optical fiber link in a program here.

In 2016, the government company Nepal Telecom (NT) and China’s official company China Telecommunication signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the operation of the Internet in Nepal through China. Basnet said that the optical fiber link established between Nepal and China would be an important milestone in the development of internet infrastructure across the country. It will promote bilateral relations between Nepal and China at the official level as well as at the civil level.
