Asteroids continue to swing past the Earth. Even though they have not recently caused any significant damage, some come so close to the Earth that thoughts of mass bloodshed are immediately raised. The US space agency NASA has rated these asteroids as “possibly hazardous.” Now, one of these asteroids, Asteroid 2021 NY1, will pass perilously close to the Earth tonight.

Before we learn more about asteroid 2021 NY1, it’s essential to first grasp what an asteroid is. Asteroids, according to NASA, are stony, airless space objects that were left over after the 4.6 billion-year-old birth of our solar system. Planets, moons, comets, and other celestial bodies were produced alongside them. Although asteroids orbit the Sun in the same way as planets, they are much smaller and categorized differently.

In our solar system, there are many asteroids found in the asteroid belt, which lies between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Asteroids can also be located in front of and behind Jupiter, in addition to the asteroid belt. Trojan asteroids are the name given to these asteroids. Because some of these Trojan asteroids approach the Earth, they are referred to as Near-Earth Objects or NEOs. NEOs are closely monitored by NASA.

At its closest approach, the asteroid 2021 NY1 will be at the following distance from the Earth: Asteroid 2021 NY1 will approach the Sun at roughly 120 million miles (193 million kilometers) from the Earth. At that distance, the asteroid will approach Earth at around 1,560,000 km, which is nearly four times the distance between Earth and the moon. This is the closest this deadly asteroid will go to Earth.

Details about Asteroid 2021 NY1: Asteroid 2021 NY1 is between 130 and 300 meters in diameter, which is somewhat more than three times the size of the Statue of Liberty. The asteroid is speeding through space at 33,800 km/h, or nearly 27 times the speed of sound.

When will the asteroid pass Earth? It will pass by the Earth at the time of the autumn equinox when there will be about 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of the night.
