Arnab Goswami, editor-in-chief of Republic TV, was arrested by the Mumbai Police from his home on Wednesday morning in connection with the suicide of a 53-year-old interior designer and his mother.
The Republic News Channel claims that Arnab has been arrested in a case that has already been closed. Inspector-General of Police (Konkan Range) Sanjay Mohite confirmed that Arnab Goswami has been arrested by the Raigad police. However, he declined to provide more details.
The Mumbai Police has not officially revealed in which case Arnab Goswami has been arrested. It is being told that Arnab has been arrested under Section 306 of the IPC for abetment in the alleged suicide case of designer Anvay Naik and his mother Kumud Naik. In a letter written before the suicide in May 2018, Anvay Naik alleged that he did not pay after the interior design of Republic Network’s studio.
According to the news agency ANI, Arnab Goswami has alleged that the Mumbai Police barged into the house and scrambled with him. Republic TV channel has shared video clips, in which police are seen entering Goswami’s house and clashes are also taking place. According to AAI, Arnab Goswami has alleged that his father-in-law, mother-in-law, son and wife were assaulted by the Mumbai Police. In the video which is running on Republic TV, it is being claimed that the police are seen mistreating Arnab.
Javadekar condemned the situation
Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar have condemned the arrest of Arnab Goswami and attacked the Maharashtra government. Prakash Javadekar tweeted, ‘We condemn the attack on freedom of the press in Maharashtra. This is not the way the press behaves. It reminds us of those days of an emergency when the press was treated this way. ‘
