If 2020 was a film, the title would’ve been ‘A series of unfortunate events’. While people are still coming to terms with the Beirut blast, in another gut wrenching incident, 17 people died in a plane crash in India.

On the 7th of August 2020, Friday, an Air India Express plane crashed at Karipur airport in Kozhikode, Kerala. This happened when the plane was landing at the airport. It was a Dubai-Kozhikode Air India flight number IX-1344.

The crash took place at 7:38 pm. It was raining heavily in Kozhikode at that time. The visibility at the runway that the plane was landing on was poor due to the rain, and that’s what caused the crash. There were 190 people on-board including the flight crew.

The flight was being run under the Vande Bharat mission. The cockpit and cabin suffered extensive damage. The crash resulted in 18 casualties (confirmed dead), as per live updates. Deepak Sathe, the pilot of the plane was one of the people who died in the crash.

The rescue and salvage effort went on till midnight. People were being taken and admitted in different hospitals until 2:00 am. Many people were severely injured in the plane crash.

The Minister of the Civil aviation of India, Mr. Hardeep Singh Puri took to his social media to inform everyone about the plane crash. He tweeted, “As per the flight manifest there were 190 people on flight AXB-1344 including 174 adult passengers, 10 infants, 4 cabin crew & 2 pilots.
Unfortunately, 16 people have lost their lives. I offer my heartfelt condolences to their next of kin & pray for speedy recovery of the injured.”

Updating everyone about the ones injured in the plane accident, the Kerala State Health Minister KK Shailaja said, “The injured persons have been rushed to Kozhikode Medical College and other nearby hospitals. Those admitted are having serious injuries.”

This woeful incident has shaken everyone to the core. Everyone’s deeply saddened by this incident. While the number of covid cases in India is increasing rapidly, such incidents are taking place to make things worse.

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi condoled the families who lost their loved ones in the accident. He tweeted, “Pained by the plane accident in Kozhikode. My thoughts are with those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest. Spoke to Kerala CM @vijayanpinarayi Ji regarding the situation. Authorities are at the spot, providing all assistance to the affected.”

As far India’s coronavirus cases are concerned, the covid cases crossed the 20 lakh mark yesterday after 62,538 new cases were recorded. The death toll in the country now stands at 41,585.
