The 90’s super hit sitcom follows the merry misadventures of six 20-something buddies as they navigate the pitfalls of work, life, and love in the 1990s Manhattan. The series teaches us about love and friendship. Every sitcom has its pros and cons but here are 5 really great reasons why the American sitcom Friends is the best sitcom ever.
• It’s extremely relatable even after all these years
Although some of the jokes on friends are outdated, the series is absolutely hilarious. Watching it while you’re in your twenties will be a seriously relatable experience, as you see Rachel and Monica try and find their dream jobs, Joey try to break into acting, and Ross go through all his romantic troubles. The characters are just relatable to a point where you
feel like you know them personally. Sometimes, the situations they get themselves into are eerily similar to things that happen in your own life!
• It taught us relationship rules
Friends showcased an abundance of awkward relationship situations before Tinder was even invented. Accidentally being left out of a threesome, the murky lines of being on a break, and let’s not forget the importance of not saying your ex’s name during your wedding vows. Even if you haven’t watched friends, you know Monica and Chandler are the most perfect couple ever. They’re amazing and yes they teach you the rules of relationships.
• It gave us the best quotes and memes
There are many reasons that Friends is still binged by thousands every year, I’m one of those people who is currently binge-watching Friends for the third time. But perhaps one of the biggest reasons why I watched it again is because it is just so quotable! If you’re a Friends fan, there’s no way you don’t work Friends quotes into your regular conversation. Are you moving a couch? Better yell PIVOT! Then there’s the iconic “we were on a break,” Phoebe’s songs, particularly “Smelly Cat,” Joey’s “How you doin’,” Monica’s iconic “I know”, and that’s only scratching the surface. If you look around on any social media platform, Twitter, Instagram, anything, you’re sure to find tons of memes, jokes, and GIFs all from the iconic sitcom, because there are just so many perfect quotes to fit every situation.
• The consistency of the show
Friends, as corny as many people think it is, it was definitely a very well written show. The producers apparently spent a lot of effort creating an elaborate yet consistent back story for each of the main characters, right from the beginning. This careful planning ensured they didn’t write their way into impossible corners. The dialog was always sharp and dynamic and kept the story moving along at a fast pace. It never bored you in spite of having ten seasons with over 20 episodes each. Most of the people are still hoping for a reunion because it was that great!
• The theme song of Friends is unbeatable
How could I forget the best theme song ever? This is the only theme song I never skip. The theme song is so recognizable that even people who haven’t watched it know it’s the Friends theme song. You can’t hear the opening chords of “I’ll Be There For You” by The Rembrandts and not immediately connect it to Friends sitcom and the cast all jumping into the fountain and then sitting on that couch. It’s one of those songs that, when you listen to it, you might even get a little choked up with nostalgia if you grew up in the 90s because it perfectly encapsulates everything about the time.
