Shivakumara Swami of Sidhganga Matth of Karnataka died on Monday after a long illness. Swamiji of the Lingayat-Veershiv community was 111 years old. The state government announced a three-day state mourning on his death. People considered Swamiji as Walking God.

Shivakumara Swami, who was called Walking God (living God), was born on 1 April 1907 in Ramnagar district of Veerpura village of Karnataka. Dr. Shivkumara Swami was the chief saint of Sidhganga Matth in Tumkur of Karnataka. This monastery of the Lingayat community is 300 years old. Among the followers, the popular as the incarnation of the 12th century social reformer Basava was also the head of the Shivakumar Swami Sidhganga Education Society, which operates from around 125 academic institutions in the state, from engineering colleges to business schools.

The Lingayat community’s monastery is dominated in 30 districts of Karnataka. The Lingayat community also holds considerable importance in the politics of Karnataka. In the total voters of the state, the share of voters in this community is 18 percent and they have a direct impact on more than 100 seats in the state. Perhaps this is the reason that bowed their heads in front of the largest leader Shivakumara Swami. During the campaign for the assembly elections held in the state last year, both the BJP and the Congress had come to meet Swami Shivkumara in the top leader Math. Everyone from Amit Shah to Rahul Gandhi and PM Modi met Swami and took their blessings for victory in the elections.




H. D. Kumaraswamy had demanded Bharat Ratna
Last week, CM H. D. Kumaraswamy of Karnataka had demanded the country’s highest honor Bharat Ratna for Shivakumara Swami, so that the work done by him in society can be respected. Earlier, former Karnataka Chief Minister B. S. Yeddyurappa and Jagdish have also demanded Bharat Ratna for them. On his 100th birthday in 2007, the then Karnataka government awarded Shivakumara Swami to the state’s highest civilian award ‘Karnataka Ratna’. In the year 2015, the Indian government had awarded Shivakumara Swami to Padma Bhushan.

Swamiji had been lung infection
Let me tell you that Swamiji had an operation on December 8, after which he had lung infection. Since then, he started to get sick. His operation was done for infection in the bile and liver. Recently he was put on ventilator and he was battling life and death. His doctor, God, appealed to his followers to be calm. He had told that Swamiji’s condition remained serious and he was also talking to other doctors for better treatment.
