There can be a major change in smartphones from 5G. This will allow cars, homes, machines and gadgets to be connected to an Internet connection. Its speed can be up to 100 times more than the 4G network.
The government is expected to start 5G in the country at the end of 2020. However, the telecom sector experts say that India’s preparation is slow on the launch of the 5G. South Korea, Japan, Australia, America, China, France and Germany are at least three years ahead in this regard.
One of the major reasons behind India’s downside in 5G is the poor condition of Fiber Network Infrastructure. Due to financial pressure on the telecom industry, sales of 5G spectrum have already been delayed by the end of 2019.
Telecom companies may lose interest in buying 5G spectrum with the possibility of having more debt on telecom companies and higher reserve prices of spectrum. These companies, especially Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel, are currently operating in losses. The launch of 5G can also be delayed by creating and maintaining a fiber network and not recovering the 4G internet conditions in villages and small towns. 5G smartphones will not come in the country before 2020 However, in some countries they will start selling next year.
Bad fiber connectivity
Experts say that the lack of fiber connectivity in the path of 5G is a major obstacle. Telecom towers in the country are less than 20% fiber-linked. For a fast speed of 5G data, a strong fiber-based network is important.
Tower and Infrastructure Providers Association Director General T R Dua said, “To make the 5G successful, at least 70-80% of the telecom towers should be linked to fiber. If this is not the case then difficulties will continue with the speed of data. The members of the association include Indus Towers, Bharti Infratel, American Tower Corporation, Reliance Infratel and Tower Vision.
China is far ahead of fiber connectivity. In China, 75-80% of mobile towers are connected to fiber. Moody’s Investors Service estimates that China will launch 5G services by the end of 2019 or by 2020. Its trial has already started. The Chinese government has allocated 5G spectrum for field trials to three top telecom companies – China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom this month. On the contrary, the Telecom Department of India says that the 5G spectrum sale will be in the second half of 2019. Telecom Department recently invited telecom companies, equipment vendors and other stakeholders for the 5G trial. Experts believe that the trial will take some time.
Global rating company Fitch Director (Corporate) Nitin Soni said that he is not expected to launch 5G before 2022 in the country because the telecom industry is not in a position to buy 5G spectrum in the next one year.
